FAKE, CONCEALED PLATES: FCT POLICE ORDER IMMEDIATE ARREST, PROSECUTION
ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of motorists found using fake, concealed, defaced or invalid vehicle number plates in Abuja.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD, FCAI, gave the directive on Sunday as the Command warned vehicle owners against operating vehicles without valid and clearly visible licence plates.
The police also cautioned against the unauthorised use of diplomatic number plates, including fake diplomatic plates, describing the practice as a serious security concern within the nation’s capital.
The Command said the warning followed the proliferation of vehicles without identifiable number plates, particularly SUVs, which it said could be exploited by criminal elements to evade detection, identification and arrest before, during or after the commission of offences.
According to the police, the peculiar security environment of the FCT makes proper vehicle identification critical to effective law enforcement, crime prevention and the tracking of vehicles linked to criminal activities.
Sanusi therefore directed all police officers across the FCT to intensify enforcement and ensure strict compliance with extant laws governing vehicle identification and the use of tinted glasses.
The Commissioner, however, charged officers to carry out the enforcement professionally and warned against turning the exercise into an avenue for extortion.
The Command urged motorists and residents to comply with the directive and support police operations, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
It further encouraged members of the public to report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08028940883.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, ANIPR, MIPRA.
