*Compare and Contrast a GROWTH MINDSET and a FIXED MINDSET.*
This session will explore the work done by Carol Dweck with regard to mindset and the types of mindsets. We shall understand the reason behind Carol Dweck’s classification of mindsets, and also delve more into the test conducted by her to arrive at the types of mindsets. And finally, you shall take a mindset test to determine the type of mindset you have.
Reflection 1:
Reflect on these statements before continuing the course. Have you ever said statements similar to these in your classroom or to your friends?
- That child is a slow learner.
- These students are dummies.
- Their writing is consistently poor.
- They won’t be able to do this.
Please do share your reflections in the comment section (bottom part of this page).

*Carol Dweck and her Research on Mindset*
Carol S. Dweck is an American psychologist and a professor of Psychology at Stanford University in the United States of America. Carol Dweck has profoundly changed the way we think about learning. When she was a child at school, a teacher chose to sit learners at their desks in the order of their Intelligence quotient, and that gave her a lifetime’s curiosity about intelligence. She wondered, “Is intelligence fixed? Or can we improve our intelligence?” This curiosity led her to research mindset and came up with 2 types of mindset. Her research has helped us understand the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, and how we can use this to maximize the learning potential in the children we teach.
In her quest to learn more about the human mind, she conducted a test on two different types of classes. Class 1 students were praised for their intelligence. Class 2 students were praised for their effort. She conducted 3 tests in each classroom and came up with these findings:
3 Test Conducted By Carol Dweck
The first test conducted by her in both classes wasn’t too hard. Class 1 praised for intelligence. "That’s a high score. You are smart". Class 2 was praised for its effort on the test. ‘That’s a high score. You must have worked hard.’
2nd test-much harder than the first. Class 1 performed much worse and gave up. Class 2-(growth mind-set) chose to work harder, did not give up. Test results: Class 2 performed better on the test
3rd test-Same difficulty as the first. Class 1 did worse than they did on the first test. Class 2-improved. After her research, Carol came up with two types of mindsets.
Types of Mindset
After her research, Carol Dweck came up with two types of Mindset and their explanations
According to her, there are two types of mindsets
These are;
Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset
Fixed Mindset
According to Carol Dweck, a fixed mindset is where intelligence is seen as a fixed trait. Thus, you believe your attributes and abilities are inherently fixed and will not change, no matter how much effort you put into them. For example, you begin to say things like this task is too difficult, and I can't do it because I don't have the skill set to do it. Another example is saying things like I'm not good at this subject. etc., can you think about other examples?
*Growth Mindset*
With a Growth Mindset, Carol Dweck says intelligence is seen as a quality that can be changed and developed through practice. You believe your talents and abilities can be improved and developed through your actions and efforts. For example, instead of saying I can't do something because I don't have the skill, a growth mindset person says I don’t have the right skill to do this yet. A growth mindset person gives room for improvement and believes their abilities and skills can be improved. Another example is I’ve done well with this examination; however, there is room for improvement. Think about other examples on your own.
