The most diversified investor in Nigeria is not Dangote or Abdul Rabiu - it is Tony Elumelu. He has more shares in several listed companies than anyone else in Nigeria. I call him the god of diversification. And he's my type of investor.
Tony Elumelu rose through STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS - not necessarily traditional entrepreneurship.
He is not the founder of UBA - he invested in it.
He is not the founder of Seplat - he invested in it.
He is not the founder of Transcorp - Obasanjo's Government founded Transcorp but Tony Elumelu bought stakes in it.
The list goes on.
He represents my business model and strategy. My family's portfolio currently hold shares in dozens of companies in South Africa and the USA. I once said that I don't even know all the companies I hold shares in but some ignorant Nigerians trolled. But today, with the vitality of the Dangote Refinery IPO, alot of Nigerians who use sub-brokers have now realised that they can actually hold shares in companies they won't even remember.
Nigeria lacks financial education hence we celebrate loud mouthed social media clout chasers as gurus but disrespect quite and strategic investors. Some Nigerians won't even respect you if you haven't built your own business - hence everyone is hustling but few are investing.
I am more of an investor than I am an entrepreneur. I am currently leading a small group of investors to acquire major stakes in strategic companies. We are avoiding the big companies and targeting emerging ones. We do not take Investments from outsiders. We do not accept new members. We know ourselves and can afford to lose money without calling each other a scam.
You see, the era of the Dangotes and Elumelus was a blessed era. They pooled money together and made Investments together. They lost billions together but today, they are controlling the economy of Nigeria together. They never called each other names on social media. They believed in each other. All the big names today were all part of Transcorp in 2004 when Transcorp was created. They trusted Mr. Elumelu to take over.
This social media generation is the worst when it comes to strategic relationships, investing and building wealth. They focus more on MAKE BELIEVE than substance.
