Imagine you are driving and an FRSC officer stops you.
After checking your documents, the officer hands you a Notice of Offence Sheet.
You look at it and immediately think:
“So where do I go now? Do I have to follow this officer to the command? Who am I supposed to pay?”
Here is something many Nigerian drivers don't know:
FRSC has an official procedure that allows a traffic offender to pay a prescribed fine through REMITA.
And according to FRSC's published procedure, you can initiate that payment yourself.
So, how does it work?
STEP 1 — Go to REMITA
Open your browser and visit:
www.remita.net
FRSC's published procedure identifies Remita as the electronic payment gateway for traffic fines.
STEP 2 — Select the Federal Government payment option
Look for the option to pay a Federal Government agency and proceed to the government payment section.
STEP 3 — Search for FRSC
Under the MDA/agency section, search for:
FRSC / Federal Road Safety Commission
FRSC's own published instructions say to select the Federal Road Safety Commission as the MDA.
STEP 4 — Select the appropriate service
Under the service/purpose section, select:
OFFENCE
According to FRSC's procedure, the Notice of Offence Sheet then allows the applicable offence to be selected and the prescribed amount to appear.
STEP 5 — Enter the details from your ticket
You may be required to enter information such as:
FRSC's published procedure specifically lists these details.
STEP 6 — GENERATE YOUR RRR
After completing the required information and proceeding, the system generates your Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR).
That RRR is then used to complete the payment.
STEP 7 — MAKE THE PAYMENT
FRSC says payment can be completed through available Remita channels, including internet banking, bank branches and other supported electronic payment methods.
After payment, keep your evidence of payment.
FRSC's procedure says the payer should proceed to the command where the offence ticket was issued with evidence of payment.
Don't panic.
You can ask the officer or the appropriate FRSC office to assist you with the official payment process.
You can say:
“Officer, please help me generate the official Remita payment for this offence so I can make the payment through the proper channel.”
The important thing is that you should be able to identify the official payment process and keep evidence of what you paid.
If someone simply says:
“Just give me cash and I will settle it for you.”
Be careful.
You should know exactly what offence you are being booked for, the prescribed amount and the official channel through which the payment is being made.
FRSC's published procedure provides for payment of prescribed fines through Remita and says the evidence of payment should be taken to the command where the offence was booked.
So before you hand over money, ask questions.
Don't pay an unofficial amount just because someone wearing a uniform tells you to.
Don't allow a middleman to turn an official government fine into a private transaction.
And don't forget:
If you genuinely committed the traffic offence, pay the prescribed fine through the proper channel.
If you believe you were wrongly booked, FRSC's published procedure also provides avenues for complaints.
You don't always have to depend on someone else to make your official payment for you.
Share this with another driver. It may save someone from paying the wrong person.
