Some Media buyers are thieves Beware

Media buyers quietly stole over 22 Million naira from our business in just 1b months.

We've moved on, fixed the loophole and I've been quiet about it for about a year now.

But these thieves are still working with many ecom brands doing same damage. For some it'll months later before they figure it out.

There was a loophole in our accounting system.⁣
⁣
⁣
All the media buyers who worked with me from 2023 to early 2025 cashed out a lot of money because of that loophole.⁣
⁣
⁣
They moved millions of naira from my business.⁣
⁣
⁣
In fact, some of them were making more money than me, the business owner.⁣ These people almost send me out of business.
⁣
⁣
Not a single media buyer who worked with me during that period that didn’t cash out in millions.⁣
⁣
⁣
Scaling is beautiful, but make sure you close all loopholes.⁣
⁣
⁣
If not, scaling can bring you a major setback if you’re not careful.⁣
⁣
⁣
I’ve kept quiet for about one year.⁣
⁣
⁣
It’s time to speak up. I'll call names, and tag the thieves when necessary. ⁣

This is carelessness on the business owner’s part. How could a staff member, permanent or contract, steal such million for months from your business, and you only find out after the money has been completely taken?

How many millions or billions is the business worth for you to be that disconnected from its daily operations? The way I’m actively involved in my business’s daily operations, it’s almost impossible for anyone to steal that much from me without me noticing.

In my business, a higher level of accountability is expected, but I believe it also comes down to how involved you are as a business owner.

I see and monitor almost everything. Sometimes, I even create the loophole myself and stay quiet just to see who will discover and exploit it.

GET INVOLVED 💯

Because some employees, especially in our part of the world, come into your business with two things in mind: first, to earn a living, and second, to find opportunities to become wealthy from the business itself.

That’s why, as a business owner, you shouldn’t completely detach yourself from the daily operations. Trust your team, but have systems that allow you to see, monitor and understand what is happening in your business.

@Obikwere Evans, Unless they have audit team, dubious media buyers can do it within 8 months by diverting the company's traffic.

I don't think it is really a carelessness thing.
Well, maybe I pay too much attention to details which can be bad sometimes as ir make me overwork including delegated tasks. If the traffic is diverted I will know.

But one cannot be too careful. We need good people to work with to save us from all these...

HER DRIVER PLEADED GUILTY IN COURT TO AVOID PAYING HER 1.3MILLION OF STOLEN GOODS

A Lady shared a valid business lesson that I like for us all to learn from.

Last year, her driver connived with a park driver, stole and sold her customer's goods worth 1.3million Naira. She had to replace the goods for that customer.

She then took her driver to court and they have been going through court proceedings.

His family even came, begging to pay the 1.3million Naira, so the case is closed.

The driver declined his family from paying.
He chose to plead guilty in court and sentence was passed.
His jail sentence is 3 years.
So, he prefers to serve time in jail, than pay back the money. Wow!!! Oh wow!!

The lesson here that she is shared is - "Protect your business inventory at all cost. Even when justice is served, you may not recover lost goods. The offender might choose jail term over paying back and you walk away without recovery".

Justice of the law, does not equal recovery of your money. Protect your business inventory and assets properly.

Run structured businesses.
Use structured processes.
Maybe if a properly structured logistics company had handled those goods, this wouldn't have happened. Even when items get lost, they pay.

I am grateful to her for sharing this story and the lessons.
We keep learning
